Brighter screen and Galaxy AI

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series is regarded as the benchmark for large-screen foldable devices. Now in its sixth generation, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 may look like another incremental “facelift” but the Korean smartphone maker has made several notable upgrades beyond hardware to unlock new possibilities for the foldable form factor.

The lightest and thinnest Galaxy Z series yet

Similar to what we’ve seen with the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung is now going for a more industrial look with flat edges and squared-off corners to maximise display real estate. Personally, I prefer this design approach over the previous versions that use rounded edges and corners. Weighing 239g with a thickness of 5.6mm when unfolded, this is the lightest and thinnest Galaxy Z Fold yet.

The cover screen is now slightly bigger as it goes up from 6.2″ to 6.3″. It still uses a 120Hz AMOLED panel that pushes an HD+ resolution of 2376×968 pixels.

On the inside, you still get a 7.6″ QXGA (2160×1856 pixels resolution) Infinity Flex AMOLED panel with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. However, Samsung has improved its outdoor visibility as the flexible screen now pushes a whopping 2600 nits, a huge bump from the previous 1,750 nits brightness.

According to Samsung, the Z Fold 6 has been engineered to provide improved durability and greater peace of mind. It features a double rail hinge structure, supported by a strengthened folding edge to distribute shocks of external impacts. They have also enhanced the layers on the screen to minimise crease but it is still noticeable when you look at it from a certain angle.

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy and it comes mated with 12GB of RAM. In terms of storage, the device is offered in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options. To keep things cool, the Z Fold 6 now feature a 1.6x larger vapour chamber to ensure optimal performance during heavy-duty multi-tasking.

The rest of the Z Fold 6’s hardware remains mostly unchanged. For cameras, the rear triple-camera setup gets a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 10MP telephoto camera that supports 3x optical zoom and up to 30x Space zoom. The main screen has a 4MP under-display camera, while the cover gets a 10MP selfie shooter.

Powering the device is still the same 4,400mAh battery and there are no changes to the charging speed. It still supports 25W fast wired charging via USB-C and 15W fast wireless charging.

Samsung says the latest foldable devices are the most durable Galaxy Z series yet, equipped with Armor Aluminium and Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The device also gets IP48-rated dust and water resistance which is great for accidental splashes but Samsung discourages you from taking it to the beach or the pool.

New Galaxy AI features optimised for foldables

The biggest highlight of the new Galaxy Z Fold 6 is its Galaxy AI capabilities. In addition to the Generative AI features for notetaking, messaging and imaging on the Galaxy S24, Samsung has added new features that make full use of the larger foldable form factor.

This includes a dual-screen live translation mode when the device is in stand mode. From your side of the screen, you can view the translated phrases in your selected language while the other party can view your phrases translated in their local language on the cover display. If you have the new Samsung Galaxy Buds, there’s even an option to listen to the translation directly from the earbuds.

Since the Galaxy Z Fold 6 supports S Pen input, there are Generative AI features that turn your sketches to completed images and there’s also Portrait Studio which can turn your normal portrait shots into cartoons, 3D or watercolour effects.

The Circle to Search feature can now be used to solve math problems and you can also enable overlay translations for PDF documents without modifying the original file.

Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers incremental hardware upgrades and Samsung is banking on generative AI as the big pull factor for consumers to make the switch. Similar to the Galaxy S24, we reckon that the full suite of Galaxy AI features will be free for a limited time. Samsung has yet to provide details about paid subscription options for Galaxy AI beyond 2025.
