Oppo Find X8 series revealed with a camera shutter button

One of the most notable new features Apple has included with the iPhone 16 series is the new camera shutter button. And it looks like Oppo is next to fit that feature onto its upcoming smartphone, the Find X8 series. Oppo’s Find Series Product Manager, Zhou Yibao, recently published a video on his Weibo account, showcasing the camera shutter button on the soon-to-be-launch Oppo Find X8 Pro.

Prior to Apple, Sony was one of the manufacturers that consistently included camera shutter buttons with many of its Xperia smartphones. In fact, the Japanese tech giant has been doing this for over a decade now.

The shutter buttons featured on Sony Xperia smartphones including the brand’s latest Xperia 1 VI are simply two-stage physical buttons that allow you to half-press to focus and fully press to take a photo.

The one found on the Oppo Find X8 on the other hand is a pressure-sensitive button that performs in a way closer to the ones found on the iPhone 16 series. According to Zhou’s showcase, users can double-tap the button to launch the camera app, even when the phone is locked, and press once to take a photo.

Like the iPhone 16, users can also swipe their fingers on top of the camera shutter button to zoom in or out, a feature which Sony Xperia smartphones do not have. What’s even cooler is these features will continue to work even when the phone is underwater, a capability users can take advantage of thanks to the Oppo Find X8 being rated for IP68/IP69 water and dust resistance.

Oppo’s camera shutter button isn’t a copy of Apple’s

Despite sporting similar capabilities to the iPhone 16 series, Zhou said that the feature has been in development since late last year, but hasn’t been officially released due to some “pain points” that needed to be ironed out first.

As mentioned already, the camera shutter button on the Oppo Find X8 isn’t an actual physical button. Instead, it’s a pressure-sensitive strip that features haptic feedback.

The Oppo Find Series Product Manager explained that this design decision was made so that users wouldn’t unsettle the phone when pressing the button. He also emphasised that Oppo has paid attention to the pressure sensitivity of the shutter button, ensuring a more user-friendly experience.

Zhou mentioned the shutter button has been strategically placed on the right side of the phone to ensure more ergonomic operations, no matter if the phone is held in a portrait or landscape orientation.

Earlier this month, the Oppo Find X8 was spotted to have been listed on the SIRM database since the 1st of October 2024. Though, upon checking at the time of writing this article, that listing seems to have been removed.

Anyhow, could this mean that the Oppo Find X8 series, which consists of the Find X8 and the Find X8 Pro, will be making its launch in Malaysia soon? These devices are expected to make their global debut later this month (October 2024).

Although yet to be launched, Zhou Yibao has confirmed some specification details about the Oppo Find X8, including a flat display, metal frame, 50W wireless charging, physical mute switch, NFC, an Apple MagSafe-inspired magnetic wireless charging mechanism, as well as the brand’s own version of the Dynamic Island. He even unveiled the phone’s packaging box.

The smartphone is also said to feature a Hasselblad-tuned 50MP tri-camera setup, consisting of a main camera, an ultrawide camera, and a 3x periscope telephoto shooter. Just in case the above information wasn’t enough, images of the Oppo Find X8 and X8 Pro have also been leaked online.
