Touch ‘n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) is going beyond just a cross-border payment provider as they have added a Travel eSIM feature under its GoTravel portfolio. An eSIM is a virtual SIM card where users with a compatible smartphone can sign up and activate the new line without needing a physical SIM card.
From the looks of it, TNG Digital wants to make it easier for international travellers to acquire an eSIM and it can be purchased with just a couple of taps within the eWallet app.
How to buy Travel eSIM from TNG eWallet?
Buying an eSIM from TNG eWallet can be done instantly and you can activate it within minutes after purchase. To purchase an eSIM, just tap on “More” from the home screen of the TNG eWallet app and then search for “Travel eSIM”.
Once you’re in the Travel eSIM page, you can select your destination and then choose the eSIM data plan required for your trip. To proceed, just continue with the payment and you’ll receive a generated QR code to install the eSIM on your compatible smartphone.
From the looks of it, TNG Digital is teaming up with Airalo for its Travel eSIM offering.
TNG eWallet Travel eSIM Rates
TNG eWallet’s Travel eSIM is available for country specific as well as multi-country regional and worldwide options. These SIMs are predominantly data only and voice calls are not included. For a country specific eSIM plan, the rates for 1GB data valid for 7 days start from RM7 in Singapore to as high as RM42.75 for countries such as Belarus.
The cost per GB gets cheaper if you go for bigger quota and longer validity. If we compare the rates, it seems to be quite expensive compared to what our current telcos are offering for data roaming.
If you go for multi-country eSIM options, the Asia plan starts from RM22.50 for 1GB valid for 7 days and Oceania plan starts from RM20.25 for 1GB valid for 7 days. Meanwhile, the Europe plan starts from RM13.50 for 500MB valid for 3 days and the Middle East and North Africa option starts from RM33.75 for 1GB valid for 7 days.
The extensive Global plan which covers 149 countries is priced from RM40.50 for 1GB for 7 days and 3GB for 30 days costs a hefty RM108. If you’re travelling long term and need more data, its biggest 20GB option valid for 365 days costs RM310.50.
If the multi-country plan costs more than RM80, it would be more worthwhile to activate an unlimited data roaming plan from your current postpaid telco.
As a reference, CelcomDigi currently offers 14-day unlimited pass with 3GB high-speed data daily for RM98, while Maxis offers 15-day unlimited pass with 1GB high-speed data daily for RM99. Meanwhile, CelcomDigi offers a 30-day pass for RM118/month while Maxis has recently increased the rates to RM149/month.
While TNG eWallet’s Travel eSIM provides convenience for last minute travellers, there are other third party eSIM providers that can provide more data for less.
