Will Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 be the world’s thinnest foldable?

In July 2024, Samsung updated its foldable smartphone series with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Although packing improvements such as slightly larger and brighter displays, improved processors and cameras, along with more advanced AI features, these were still not the kind of progress many expected from the company that pioneered foldable smartphones in the first place.

Since then, the Korean foldable duo has been outclassed by many of their competitors, including the Oppo Find N5, Honor Magic V3, and Xiaomi Mix Flip, which offered much thinner and lighter designs, displays that stretch edge to edge, while still retaining reasonably high-end specs.

Fast forward to today, Samsung is expected to hold its summer Galaxy Unpacked event for 2025 in just three months or less, which should see the company launching its next-gen foldable models. Among the foldables Samsung is expected to launch in July include the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Galaxy Z Flip 7, as well as an affordable flip-style foldable rumoured to be called the Galaxy Z Flip FE.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 to be world’s thinnest book-style foldable?

Let’s start with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Rumours suggest that this book-style foldable phone will measure just 8.2mm thick when folded, a drastic leap from the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 12.1mm.

If this turns out to be true, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will hop straight to the top to become the world’s thinnest book-style foldable smartphone. For context, the current record holder is the Oppo Find N5, which measures 8.93mm, with the Honor Magic V3 following behind at 9.2mm.

Aside from becoming thinner, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is also expected to sport a shorter aspect ratio, instead of the slim and tall form factor the Galaxy Z Fold series has been adopting for quite some time, making it more similar to a typical candybar smartphone.

Like the Korean- and Chinese-exclusive Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition/Galaxy W25 Fold, the Z Fold 7 is also expected to sport an expanded 8″ inner display, up from the regular Z Fold 6’s 7.6″ panel. You can also expect the Z Fold 7’s crease to become more subtle, as the Z Fold 6 is certainly a little behind in this regard.

At the heart of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to be the same chipset that’s powering the Galaxy S25 series — the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy.

Now, the cameras. If you’ve been feeling underwhelmed by the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s optics setup, well, we have good and bad news for you. Rumours suggest that the Z Fold will finally sport a 200MP main camera that has been with the Galaxy S Ultra series for three generations at this point.

However, that’s where the good news ends. Both the 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera are expected to be carried over from the Galaxy Z Fold 6, with no additional periscope telephoto camera to be added on. Simply speaking, if you want the best smartphone cameras Samsung has to offer in 2025, just buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

With all of the rumoured upgrades mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to carry a EUR100 (~RM495) price bump over the Z Fold 6. In Malaysia, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 was launched in July 2024 with a starting retail price of RM7,299 for the base 256GB storage configuration. However, fast forward to today (early May 2025), that model can be had from as low as RM6,079 on e-commerce platforms like Shopee.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 to finally get edge-to-edge cover display?

As for Samsung’s upcoming flip-style foldable smartphone — expected to be called the Galaxy Z Flip 7, it’s rumoured to finally sport a cover display that actually stretches edge to edge, measuring 4″ rather than the Z Flip 6’s (and even the Flip 5) 3.4″ panel.

This will finally put Samsung’s next-gen flip phone on par with competitors like the Xiaomi Mix Flip and Motorola Razr 60 Ultra. There are rumours too claiming that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will be slimmer than the Z Flip 6, although there’s no info on specific measurements yet. Also, we can expect the Galaxy Z Flip 7 to be thinner than its predecessor, while sporting slimmer bezels for its inner display too.

Like the Z Fold 7, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is reported to run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset. But there are recent reports suggesting that Samsung’s own Exynos 2500 could be the chipset powering the Z Flip 7. Anyhow, its battery is also expected to be expanded to 4,300mAh from the Z Flip 6’s 4,000mAh unit.

What’s said to remain unchanged, though, is its camera. Rumours suggest that you can expect the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will continue to rock the same 50MP main camera and 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera setup from the Z Flip 6.

Samsung to launch “Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE” budget foldable too?

Aside from the Galaxy Z Flip 7, there has also been news on Samsung working on a more budget-friendly flip-style foldable, which tipsters say could be called the “Galaxy Z Flip FE” or “Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE”. Whether this phone will also make its launch together with the other two more premium Samsung foldables mentioned above is still a question.

Being the more affordable device, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is most probably not going to get a full cover screen, but rather a 3.4″ one that’s found on the Z Flip 6. Inside, this budget foldable is reported to sport a 6.7″ display, but with thicker bezels than what was seen on the Z Flip 6. In terms of performance, the Galaxy Z Flip FE could either use Samsung’s own Exynos 2500 flagship mobile chipset or the Exynos 2400e from the Galaxy S24 FE.
