EV owners can enjoy cheaper home charging with TNB’s off-peak pricing

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has revealed its new electricity tariff structure which will take effect 1st July 2025. According to the power utility company, over 23 million domestic customers are guaranteed to remain unaffected by the latest changes.

However, there’s a new ToU scheme which has been expanded to domestic users (Home consumers), allowing them to enjoy cheaper electricity during off-peak hours. This is good news for EV owners who often charge their vehicles overnight or during the weekends.

What is Time of Use (ToU)?

According to TNB, Time of Use (ToU) is a scheme that allows customers to manage their electricity usage more efficiently and enjoy lower rates during off-peak hours.

Essentially, the electricity rates are lower during off-peak hours to encourage more usage when the electricity demand is low. However, the electricity rates are higher during peak-hours due to higher demand.

Previously, this ToU scheme is only offered to commercial users that fall under the Medium and High Voltage Non-Domestic category.

With the new restructuring which takes effect from 1st July 2025, the ToU scheme will finally be available to Domestic and non-Domestic Low Voltage customers.

How much can you save with ToU Off-peak pricing?

Normal vs ToU Scheme for usage of 1500kWh and below

If your monthly electricity consumption is within 1500kWh, you can enjoy a lower off-peak rate of 24.43 sen/kWh which translates to a savings of 2.6 sen/kWh versus the normal scheme tariff of 27.03 sen/kWh.

Assuming that you consume 400kWh (enough to fully charge Proton e.MAS 7 for about 6 times) per month for EV charging during off-peak hours, the total energy charge is RM97.72 versus RM108.12, which is a savings of RM10.40.

Normal vs ToU Scheme for usage above 1500kWh

Meanwhile, for usage above 1,500kWh, the off-peak rate is RM34.43 sen/kWh which also translate to a savings of 2.6 sen/kWh versus the normal scheme pricing of 37.03 sen/kWh.

Assuming you use 800kWh (enough to fully charge Zeekr 009 for about 6 times) for EV charging on this higher tariff, the energy cost would be RM275.44 on ToU versus RM296.24, which is a savings of RM20.80.

However, do note that the peak rate is slightly more expensive than the normal scheme at 28.52 sen/kWh for consumption up to 1500kWh or 38.52 sen/kWh for consumption above 1500kWh. That’s an increase of 1.49 sen/kWh compared to the all-day rate on the normal rate.

Take note that these pricing figures are only for the energy cost. Under the new structure announced by the Energy Commission, there are other applicable components such as Capacity Charge, Automatic Fuel Adjustment, Network Charge and Retail Charge.

Of course, if your overall electricity consumption is high, it is recommended to get a home solar system to lower your monthly electricity bills.

When are the off-peak hours?

The ToU Scheme offers two time zones as listed as follows:

Monday to Friday

  • Peak: 2:00pm to 10:00pm (8 hours)
  • Off-Peak: 10:00pm to 2:00pm (16 hours)

Saturday, Sunday

  • Off-Peak: all day (24 hours)

To maximise your savings, you can schedule your EV charging and other high-power electricity consumption activities such as washing/dryer/heater/oven towards the off-peak hours. The off-peak duration is pretty long from 10:00pm to 2:00pm on weekdays and all-day on weekends, which provides an extended time to enjoy cheaper electricity rate.

Who is eligible for ToU Scheme? How to apply?

According to TNB’s FAQ, the ToU scheme is available to customers who have been installed with Smart Meter and Current Transformer (CT) meter or Remote Meter Reading (RMR) meter.

ToU scheme isn’t mandatory or automatic, and it is offered as an optional plan to customers. To switch to the ToU scheme, you’ll need to visit the nearest Kedai Tenaga. You can find the list of Kedai Tenaga here.
