HTC is still launching smartphones in 2024

Remember HTC? The popular Taiwanese brand that made premium and iconic Android smartphones over 10 years ago? Believe it or not, they are still making smartphones in 2024 and their upcoming device will be unveiled on 12th June 2024.

According to their teaser posted on X which carries the hashtag #ALLFORU, the upcoming HTC device appears to be a continuation of the HTC U series. This is expected to be the HTC U24 Pro which will succeed last year’s HTC U23 Pro which was described as a “Metaverse-focused” smartphone.

From the teaser image, the new HTC phone doesn’t look anything special as it gets a regular candy bar phone design with two camera bumps. In a sea of smartphones, it does look quite underwhelming.

About two months ago, the purported specs were revealed on the Google Play Console and it is far from a flagship. As suggested by the listing, the upcoming HTC device will be running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and it will come with 12GB of RAM along with a Full HD+ display.

It is safe to say that this isn’t a comeback phone for the once-legendary smartphone maker. It doesn’t even run on the latest Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chip that can support generative AI capabilities. So what’s the point of launching another regular mid-tier phone after being dormant in the smartphone scene for such a long time?

Back in 2011, HTC was among the top 3 smartphone brands just behind Apple and Samsung. Today, they are virtually non-existent in the smartphone segment following the rise of Chinese smartphone brands. The last flagship HTC offered in Malaysia was the HTC U12+ released back in 2018 and interestingly, the old smartphone is still listed on HTC Malaysia’s website.
