The MGS5 EV has officially launched in Malaysia and this is MG’s brand new fully electric SUV which replaces the previous MG ZS EV. Built on the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) as the MG4, the MGS5 EV is rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and it’s priced from RM115,900.

The MGS5 EV is a new contender in the highly competitive sub-RM150,000 5-seater fully electric SUV segment and it goes head on with the Proton e.MAS 7, BYD Atto 3 and the Omoda E5.

MGS5 EV Malaysia Price

The MGS5 EV is launched with 3 trim options which offers 2 battery sizes and just one motor variant. Here’s the official pricing for the MGS5 EV in Malaysia:

  • MGS5 EV COM 49kWh – RM115,900
  • MGS5 EV COM Long Range 62kWh – RM125,900
  • MGS5 EV LUX Long Range 62kWh – RM135,900

The MGS5 EV is offered in 5 colours – Camden Grey, Artic White, Monument Silver, Dynamic Red and Elegent Latte (for LUX Long Range only).

MGS5 EV Malaysia Specs

Unlike the MG4 lineup which a wide variety of high-voltage battery and electric motor options, the MGS5 EV lineup in Malaysia is pretty much streamlined across the board except for the battery and equipment levels. All MGS5 EV variants for our market come with single motor driving the rear wheels, that does 125kW (168hp) and 250Nm of torque.

When it comes to the battery, the 49kWh unit for the base-spec model provides up to 340km of WLTP-rated range and it supports DC fast charging of up to 120kW. Meanwhile, the larger 62kWh unit provides extended WLTP-rated range of up to 430km. All MGS5 EV models in Malaysia are using LFP batteries and they come with a slower 7kW single-phase AC onboard charger.

Unlike other markets such as Thailand and Europe, we don’t get the more powerful MGS5 EV variant with a 180kW (241hp) and 350Nm electric motor that’s paired with a slightly larger 64kWh battery. That version can do 0-100km/h in just 6.1 seconds which definitely packs more punch than the sole 125kW motor option that’s offered in the Malaysian market.

The MGS5 EV is 4,476mm long, 1,849mm wide and 1,621mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,730mm. In terms of size, it is smaller than the Proton e.MAS 7 but it is slightly longer and taller than the BYD Atto 3. The new EV has all round disc brakes, MacPherson Struts for the front and multi-link (5-link) suspension setup for the rear.

MGS5 EV

The base-spec MGS5 EV COM with 49kWh battery is quite barebones. It rides on 17″ wheels and is equipped with fabric seats, polyurethane steering, reverse camera and four speakers. Meanwhile, the COM 62kWh version adds leather seats and a 6-way power seat for the driver.

The range topping MGS5 EV LUX gets all the bells and whistles with larger 18″ wheels, rear centre armrest, wireless phone charger, rear reading lamp, rain sensing wiper, 360-degree surround view camera, power tailgate with kick sensor, panoramic sunroof and 6 speakers. The passenger gets a 4-way manual seat across the range.

All MGS5 EV variants in Malaysia are equipped with a 12.8″ infotainment display with support for Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also three USB charging ports as standard.

In the safety department, MG isn’t making any compromises. All three MGS5 EV options get the same suite of safety & MG Pilot features which include 7 airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane keep assist (LKA), rear collision warning (RCW) and traffic jam assist.
