Smart #5 EV spotted in Malaysia, local launch soon?

After launching the Smart #1 and Smart #3, Pro-Net seems to be getting ready to launch the Smart #5 in Malaysia. The upcoming fully electric SUV has been spotted in Malaysia with a matte olive green paint job and it is expected to make its official appearance in the next couple of days.

The Smart #5 is not only the biggest Smart EV yet, but it’s also the brand’s first EV to feature an 800V architecture.

The vehicle that was spotted locally seems to be either the Smart #5 Premium or Summit Edition as it comes with 20″ wheels and a roof light bar. It is also worth noting that the vehicle is a Left-Hand-Drive (LHD) model as the steering is on the left side.

Smart Malaysia has started its registration of interest for the #5 on its website and there’s a countdown timer that’s set for 8th May 2025. Based on the teasers and timing, it seems that the Smart #5 will be making its first local debut at Malaysia Autoshow 2025.

Besides showcasing the new EV, there’s a possibility that Pro-Net may provide further details including indicative pricing and early bird offers.

Smart #5 Pro, Premium and Summit Edition

The Smart #5 is the brand’s third all-electric model under its current Geely-Mercedes Benz joint venture and it is positioned as a mid-size SUV. In terms of size, it is quite similar to the Tesla Model Y as the Smart #5 measures 4,705mm long, 1,920mm wide and has a wheelbase of 2,900mm. Being the largest EV in the Smart family, the #5 offers 34 compartments including a 72L illuminated frunk and a spacious boot that offers up to 1530L of storage with the rear seat folded.

When it comes to tech, the Smart #5 runs on an AMD V2000 chipset and it features a 25.6″ Augmented Reality head-up display (HUD), a 10.25″ Full HD digital instrument cluster and two 13″ OLED screens in the centre and for the front passenger.

Unlike the Smart #1 and Smart #3 which feature Beats Audio, the higher-end Smart #5 variants are equipped with a 20-speaker 1,190W Sennheiser Signature Sound System.

The base Smart #5 Pro comes with a single motor pushing 250kW (335hp) and 373Nm of torque, capable of 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds. It gets a 76kWh 400V LFP battery that offers 465km of WLTP-rated range. It supports 150kW of DC fast charging which takes 30 minutes to charge from 10-80%.

Meanwhile, the higher Smart #5 Premium and above gets a larger 100kWh 800V NMC battery which boasts up to 590km of WLTP-rated range. Thanks to its 800V architecture, the 100kWh battery versions supports up to 400kW of DC fast charging, capable of topping up the battery from 10-80% in just 18 minutes.

The Premium RWD model also gets a more powerful motor pushing 267kW (370hp) and 373Nm of torque. This also reduces its century sprint time to 6.5 seconds.

There’s also an AWD version which adds another 165kW (221hp) motor, providing a total output of 432kW (579hp) and 643Nm of torque. 0-100km/h is quicker too at 4.9 seconds but the WLTP-rated range is shorter at 540km.

For those seeking a more off-road and adventurous look, there’s the Smart #5 Summit Edition. Besides having an AWD setup, the Summit Edition also adds extra accessories such as an electric trailer hitch, a roof platform, roof light bar, underbody protection, roof carrier, side steps, side bag and side ladder.

Smart #5 Brabus

If you’re looking for outright performance, the AWD setup of the Smart #5 Brabus offers 475kW (637hp) of power and 710Nm of torque. It can go from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, up to a higher top-speed of 210km/h instead of 200km/h on the other variants.

The Brabus variant still maintains the same 100kWh 800V NMC battery with 540km of WLTP-rated range. It also supports fast 400kW DC charging that can juice up from 10-80% in 18 minutes.

As you would expect from the Brabus variant, you get extra red highlights, 21″ 10-spoke Brabus Monoblock Z wheels, Alcantara steering wheel and microfibre seats. Like the previous Smart #1 and #3 Brabus variants, you also get simulated engine sounds as well.

In Mainland China, the Smart #5 starts from CNY 239,900 (about RM138,539) for the base RWD variant with the smaller 76kWh battery, while the Smart #5 Brabus with the larger 100kWh battery is going for CNY329,900 (about RM190,513).

When it launches in Malaysia, we reckon that the Smart #5 would likely to be priced from about RM200,000 onwards. This is considering that the current Smart #3 Pro is priced at RM175,000 while the Smart #3 Brabus is priced at RM255,000.
