The Sports Report: Astros Pitch Combined Nohitter To Even World Series

Hello, I'm your host, Houston Mitchell. Let's get news right away.

From Bill Shakin: In the days before pitch counts, 13-man teams, and trouble executing third-seekers — and frankly before Tommy John's surgery — pitching was simple: They played well while they were in the game. No self-respecting manager would dream of firing a pitcher who kicked out a popular hitter in the middle of a World Series game his team was supposed to be winning.

Only one player has never scored in a World Series: Don Larsen in 1956.

And yet here we were, nine shots into Wednesday's history, when the doors opened. Christian Javier is hitless in six innings for the Houston Astros. His day was over.

Larsen must have thrown a lot of pitches, right? They did that day too.

Oh no. Larsen played a perfect game on 97 fields. How many assists did Javier make on Wednesday? It would be 97.

For the Astros, all is well that ends well. Brian Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly took Javier to the first combined no-hitter in World Series history.

"It's crazy," said third baseman Alex Bregman. “We grew up with the World Series. We know baseball has been around for a very, very long time."

The Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0, tying the game at two games apiece. The next day, the Phillies hit five home runs and more than half of their games were strikes.

lakers

From Dan Wike: If the Lakers get people this season, the goal sure is bleak.

In fact, they're a pretty poor offensive team to start the season with a five-game losing streak, losses below the rim and a nearly unthinkable three-point line.

Plus, they're capable of extremely good basketball since their defense drives their defense's offense, a high-speed scrap machine that can turn a game in the blink of an eye, just like they did against Denver on Sunday.

But what makes the Lakers harder to understand is a night like Wednesday versus the Pelicans when they were all of the above — good and bad, successful and unsuccessful, winning and losing.

All of this confuses her. And, at least on Wednesday, very interesting.

The Lakers extended a big lead in the third quarter and were seconds away from their sixth loss of the season, but a great game and some big hits propelled them to a 120-117 victory in overtime.

Matt Ryan, who made the Lakers the 15th player on the team with a surprise cornerback contract, found three crosses from Austin Reeves in arguably the greatest win of his young pro career.

"It's a great game," said Anthony Davis. "…Matt did what he did."

mowing

From Andrew Greiff: The stands were not closed Wednesday because the city's attention in early November was more focused on the Astros' performance in the World Series hometown than on basketball. The Toyota Center's loudest applause came between the third and fourth quarters when the scoreboard showed the Astros leading in Philadelphia.

The next strongest moment came two minutes later. John Wall, the point guard whose divorce from Houston last summer paved the way for the Clippers to purchase a free agent contract, stole a pass in midfield, deftly dribbled to the three-point line and then charged with paint. As Rockets guard Dyshawn Nix spun the ball in a full circle around his waist, he found Kevin Porter Jr. waiting in the ring and threw the ball over Moses Brown's head. Before Brown extended his 7ft 3in wingspan and sunk a nine-point lead, Clippers' players jumped out of their seats on the sidelines during the game.

"We actually talked about it warming up with its patented recoil," said Paul George. I've never seen anyone stop it, and of course he did.

The game that resulted in a 109-101 win for the Clippers (the Clippers' second since improving to 4-4) was the wall the Clippers had hoped for after signing him in July. It's a moment he saw during his 18-month residency in Houston.

RAMS

From Gary Klein: Cam Akers could still have a future with the Rams.

Coach Sean McVeigh said Wednesday he met with Akers and discussed options with his agent for the three-year running back, who has not practiced or played in his last two games because of an internal issue McVeigh named.

"We're working on a few different options," McVeigh said, "but I'm very encouraged by the dialogue that we've had."

There's a "possibility" that Akers could train with the team since he's in Tampa, Fla. preparing for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, McVeigh said.

"I don't want to put the cart before the horse," he said when asked if Akers could play against the Buccaneers, "but we're working on other things."

From Jeff Miller: When the Chargers signed DeAndre Carter as a free agent in April, the plan was for him to become their lead rusher and occasionally play an offensive role.

Carter could be their No. 1 receiver on Sunday in Atlanta. 1 wide.

The Chargers will likely be without Kenan Allen with an ongoing hamstring injury and possibly Joshua Palmer, who is recovering from his second injury in three months.

They will also be without Mike Williams, who is expected to be out for at least four weeks after spraining his ankle against Seattle on Oct. 23.

Behind Carter, a fifth-year pro with 77 career receptions, the Chargers' active roster includes Jason Moore Jr. and Michael Bandy. The duo has scored 10 goals in 23 NFL games.

Soccer

From Kevin Baxter: The US women's soccer team kicks off the World Cup year with a six-day training camp and two friendlies in New Zealand in January, where they will begin their World Cup defense in July.

The two games, on January 18th at Sky Stadium in Wellington and on January 21st at Eden Park in Auckland, kicking off the US World Cup, will be the USWNT's first games in New Zealand.

At the World Cup, the United States meets Vietnam, narrowly in a game against the Netherlands in Wellington, a team set for the February playoffs at Eden Park.

The United States open their World Cup group stage game against Wales in Qatar on November 21, followed by England and Iran.

The two games in January will be the first of the 2026 World Cup cycle, which will culminate with the United States, Mexico and Canada sharing responsibility for hosting the first 48-team tournament. As host countries, all three teams are automatically eligible to play in 2026.

The Kings

From Helen Elliott: Now that Kings forward Gabriel Vilardi is dominating every shift, controlling the puck like he's magnetized to his racquet, it's easy to forget that back pain nearly ended his career.

The troubles that spooked several NHL teams and caused him to drop out of the top 5 at 11th pick in the 2017 draft have continued worryingly, costing him valuable practice time and experience. He played nearly 80 games over the next three seasons of 2019-2020, the equivalent of one NHL season.

"There were a few months — I wouldn't say years, but a few months — when I wasn't sure I was going to play hockey for the rest of my life," he said, "which is pretty scary because that is everything I'm in.” “I've always wanted to know everything I've always wanted to do.

An excellent, confident junior center, he wasn't a great skater but he came to the net with great success. He was expected to play a key role in the Kings' recovery process. Instead, his ongoing back problems halted his progress and he sank deeper and deeper into the organization's depth chart over the years. He was about to become a bust.

“With all the players you like to design and cut and everything. But how many failures there were, you were surprised, – said coach Todd McLellan. "But you always come back to the packaging, the skills, the talent, the mind and the hands."
